A charming young professor, Vijay Govind, has a dream of marrying a traditional woman. He sees Geetha in a temple and falls in love with her. He meets her again when he travels to his hometown in a bus. He impresses her at first with his nature but things go south when he accidentally kisses her while trying to take a selfie with her. She complains to her brother, Phaneendra, on phone and Govind runs out of bus. They meet again when his sister gets engaged to Phaneendra. Govind requests Geetha not to reveal about him while Phaneendra keeps searching for the guy who kissed her on the bus. The misunderstanding between the couple grows as they travel together for marriage shopping and invitations. As Geetha learns his true nature and falls for him, he starts to avoid her as she doesn’t treat him well. Before Govind realizes his mistake, Geetha’s marriage is fixed with someone else and he has to win her back before they get separated forever.
Story: Vijay Govind (Vijay Deverakonda), a young college lecturer who dreams of marriage falls for Geetha (Rashmika Mandanna), a level-headed woman who’s wary of strangers and isn’t easy to convince. While things seem to go smoothly, Vijay makes a terrible mistake which not only derails any hope for his love story, but also has potential repercussions with his family.
Review: As easy as it sounds to make a rom-com, we’ve often seen filmmakers try and fail when it comes to successfully executing a “breezy entertainer” in Tollywood. Director Parasuram, however, gets it right with Geetha Govindam. His casting is spot on, writing impressive and pace of the film is just about right. With an adorable looking lead pair and some great music, Geetha Govindam is thoroughly entertaining.
We are introduced to Vijay Govind (Vijay Deverakonda), a college lecturer, who dreams of getting married and settling down with a woman. He’s a typical youngster who likes to drink and goof around with his buddies but the only thing on his mind is marriage. While on his quest to find a girl, he runs into Geetha (Rashmika Mandanna). He likes her immediately, but she remains cold and distant as they go on a bus journey together. As soon as she starts warming up to him, he makes a big mistake, that not only derails his entire love story but could also potentially impact his relationship with his father (Naga Babu) and soon to be brother-in-law (Subba Raju).
Geetha is convinced that Vijay is a compulsive flirt and an irresponsible youngster, while he calls her ‘Madam’ and keeps insisting that he’s a sincere guy. Whenever he comes close to convincing her, things go wrong. They continue in this vein to the point that it gets repetitive, but the way the actors pull it off makes it worthwhile. The dialogues work and the humour is excellent, keeping you hooked in just when you begin to lose interest. Gopi Sundar is in top form and the music stays with you right through, enhancing your viewing experience (especially the song Inkem Inkem Inkem Kavaale).
At times, though, the film slows down and seems like it’s heading nowhere, especially in the post-interval sequences. The sudden plot twists in the second half are unconvincing, and while it doesn’t necessarily spoil the film, you couldn’t help but wonder if it could’ve been better. These are, however, minor aberrations in an otherwise well-made film.
Back in a romantic avatar after Pelli Choopulu, Vijay Deverakonda owns this film. He’s charming as ever and seamlessly fits the part as Vijay Govind. Rashmika too sparkles in her debut and the scenes between the two is what makes Geetha Govindam so likeable. Rahul Ramakrishna is funny as he normally is, while Vennela Kishore steals the show with a hilarious late entrance.
Geetha Govindam has some good humour, fine music and a wonderful lead pair. But more importantly, it has a story, that despite its predictable nature, keeps the audience engaged and entertained. If you love rom-coms, you’re going to lap this up. A big thumbs up!
